6 Living Healthy September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month Around 1 in 5 children in the United States have obesity. The good news is that there are ways to prevent it: ■ Get active. Walk around, go on a bike ride or play basketball. ■ Have screen time breaks. Keep screen time used for fun to two hours a day or less. ■ Make healthy meals. Serve more vegetables, fruits and wholegrain foods. The Alliance offers the Healthy Weight for Life (HWL) program. HWL is for parents or guardians of Alliance members ages 2 to 18. The program teaches ways to support children to eat healthy, be more active and make healthy lifestyle changes. Parents and guardians of Alliance members who attend a six-week workshop can receive up to a $50 Target gift card. Checkups for members under age 21 Children, teens and young adults (under age 21) enrolled in Medi-Cal can get checkups, vaccines, health screenings and treatment for physical, mental and dental health. These services are covered under Medi-Cal for Kids and Teens. The Alliance can help: ■ Find a doctor or set up an appointment. ■ Get transportation to and from your appointment. ■ Ask for language assistance at your appointment.
